Introduction

This fall, the University of Connecticut will continue its specialized program focusing on domestic and international human rights. The ongoing program entitled, University of Connecticut Human Rights Initiative: From Ideas to Action, will sponsor programs for the entire 2005-2006 academic year. Talks, conferences, discussions, and lectures will focus on economic, social, children's, women's and civil rights in the United States and internationally.

This year our programs will continue to build upon the success of last year's Human Rights Initiative programs, which involved students and faculty at our regional campuses, professional schools, and across the Storrs campus. In addition, many of the First Year Experience instructors have encouraged student attendance at these programs and we hope that trend will continue.

I am pleased with the response to the initiatives of the Human Rights Institute and the participation of the number of schools, colleges, and departments. I commend the Human Rights Initiative Coordinating Committee for their efforts in planning this program.

If additional human rights events are scheduled after the publication of this calendar, please contact the Committee with program details at 486.8739 or by sending an e-mail to humanrights@uconn.edu. Additional events will be added to the Human Rights Initiative on-line calendar. Events will also be announced in The Advance and The Daily Campus.

Peter J. Nicholls
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
